Once timid rabbits emerging from their holes
Once timid rabbits emerging from their holes
Once not far short of Step-Toes yard, this is how the estate looks now
I had a follow up meeting with a lady yesterday who wants to see change, not just in her street but in the community in general. She is very motivated to bring a different reputation to the estate and of course, positive change. As the residents mentioned even the Police don't come down to the estate.
Since I last saw her she had taken the bull by the horns and commenced a 'Street Clean'. You should of seen it before the clean. It wasn't far short of Step-Toes yard, tyres, broken toys and general litter. She got the children in the street involved first, then the parents started to come out and offer help. They even cut the grass which they say the council has been avoiding for a long time now. The whole process took about six hours and I met some of these (who once were) apathetic folk this morning and they seem to have such a different attitude towards things. It really is brilliant! The spin-off of this is that the children from the road now have to design a 'Street Clean' leaflet (which I have been asked to judge and am going to have a little prize for). The leaflet is going to be delivered (not by me but the people with-in the community) to every door to see if this can be rolled out. I know that there is some interest from groups in other streets so fingers crossed.
The lady is going to join me on the door knock sessions and I do believe that she is a leader who will (in my eyes) definitely be part of our community holding team. And, she said she would not have done this without the support of us community organisers! Because of the positive attitude, encouragement and perseverance that we have injected into this estate, we are now starting to see the once timid rabbits emerging from their holes. This is great evidence that the Root Solutions Listening Matters process really does work .
