An eyewitness account of John Atlas of what really happened in the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) massive voter registration drives. The book provides a valuable insight into what made ACORN a success and offers hope for reviving “the real democracy”.  It does so though the example of the local and national campaigns to organize unions, fight the subprime mortgage crisis, promote living wages for working people, struggle for affordable housing and against gentrification, and help Hurricane Katrina's survivors return to New Orleans. The author engages with poverty alleviation on a myth bursting level, dispersing the conservative myth of only helping  the poor through private soup kitchens as well as the liberal stance that the solution rests simply with more government services.
